Professor Trevor Robbins, from Cambridge University and an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, has won the American Psychological Association's (APA's) 2011 Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award.

Due to be presented at the APA Convention in Washington DC in August this year, the accolade recognises distinguished theoretical or empirical contributions to basic research in psychology and was also awarded to Professor Barry Everitt.

Professor Robbins said: "We are both delighted to have received this prestigious international award, especially as relatively few psychologists from the UK have been previous recipients.

"The decision may therefore be recognition of the strengths of British psychology, especially in the domains of behavioural and cognitive neuroscience".

Professor Robbins also thanked the Medical Research Council and the Wellcome Trust for its funding in support of his and Professor Everitt's work over the last 30 years, as well as the University of Cambridge - where the studies were carried out - and many collaborators for their contributions.

The APA said: ""This award recognises distinguished theoretical or empirical contributions to basic research in psychology and, as the history of this award indicates, it is an outstanding accolade for scientific achievement".
