KUCHING, April 23 (Bernama) -- Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2009 top student, Gladys Tan Yee Kim, 18, will be going to the United States of America to pursue studies in psychology.

Prior to that, she said she would enrol at Taylor's University College for a one and half year pre-university course under the American Degree Transfer Program (ADP) to begin in June.

"I am considering universities like the Stanford University and Harvard University in the United States of America," she told reporters at a programme held in conjunction with the Amanah Saham Malaysia Week (MSAM) here on Friday.

The former Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Green Road student who obtained 10A in all subjects in the SPM examination was invited by Permodalan Nasional as its icon of inspiration at the function.

Tan said she had been offered scholarship under the National Scholarship programme and by Bank Negara to pursue studies abroad.

On her excellent performance in the SPM examination, she said she did not have any recipe.

"There is no need to wake up early or to sleep late, but to pay attention to the teachers in class," she added.

Psychology students grow professionally

Posted: 22 Apr 2010 09:25 PM PDT

This semester, psychology students have been attending various conferences throughout the Midwest. These conferences allow them to share their research with other students and professionals in the field of psychology. Currently there are five conferences that the students attend annually.

The first was the Conference for Social and Behavioral Sciences (CSBS) and it was held at the University of Northern Iowa last weekend. On Thursday, Apr. 22, students visited Northwestern College in Orange City for the Siouxland Research Conference Sioux land research conference Orange city. The third conference is Scholars Day which is held on BVU's campus where these psychology students and many others will be presenting their work. The Minnesota Undergraduate Psychology Conference (MUPC) in St. Paul, MN is the fourth conference and will be held Saturday, Apr. 24. The final conference these students will be attending is with the Midwestern Psychological Association (MPA) and will be held in Chicago, IL.

Most students are presenting individual research at these conferences. One group, Students for the Advancement of Psychological Research (SAPER) is advised by Professor of Psychology, Dr. Wind Goodfriend, and is made up of psychology students who have volunteered to conduct the research.

According to Goodfriend, students benefit from these conferences in many ways. They gain experience in public speaking and also get practice learning to talk about research in a more conversational way. Having these experiences on resume or vita will help the students get jobs or get into graduate school and feel more comfortable in those settings.
It is required of students enrolled in the Research Statistics and Resarch Thesis courses to attend MUPC.

Some of the conferences have an open acceptance policy, meaning everyone who registers is able to present. The most prestigious conference of the five is MPA. This conference requires students to submit and be accepted to present.  Six of the eight students in the Research Thesis course will be presenting at MPA.

"Most of the people who present at this conference are graduate students and faculty members, so the fact that six are going is actually really impressive," Goodfriend said.

Students are able to choose any topic they want to research and Goodfriend guides them in finding articles and books relevant to their topics. She recommends they choose a topic they are interested in and want to pursue in graduate school.

Junior Alyssa Kluver has been attending various conferences and presenting her research titled "Children and the Power of Optimism."

"All through high school I worked at a day care center and I've always enjoying working with children. I wanted to do research in this area because I wish to someday work with children, I wanted to know how to help children deal with everyday life stressors and I am especially interested in optimism as a  coping mechanism," Kluver said.

Junior Arielle Butler is a second student who has been presenting research at these conferences. Butler's research involves differences between proximal and long distance romantic relationships.

"I have been doing research in Dr. Goodfriend's Research Thesis course for both semesters this school year. Specifically, I am studying if people in these relationships have bias toward their own relationship type, as well as examining differences in commitment levels, satisfaction levels, perceived alternatives, and amounts of investments," Butler said.

She feels that presenting at these various conferences is a great honor and helps her grow as a student.

"Attending these conferences allow me to be proud of the research that I have done throughout the year. I am able to share the information that I've found and also gain insight to further research that I can do based on the feedback from other students and Psychologists," Butler said. "These conferences allow me to gain experience into the field of work that I plan to do. I plan on attending graduate school and will have to do research while being there as well as a thesis project."

Food Psychology Coaches Launch New Weight Loss Program for Ultimate Life Fitness Results

Posted: 23 Apr 2010 12:17 AM PDT

Food Psychology Coaches unveils a new weight loss program without dieting or physical exercise. The Inside Out Workout low-impact high-reward workout program guides subscribers using quick weekly video coaching emails. The Inside Out Workout iphone application called "Food Workout" is an interactive game used while eating; both new workout programs help with weight loss, digestion, relaxation and quality of life.

Phoenix, AZ. (PRWEB) April 23, 2010 -- Successful personal coaches Tammy Kaatz and Daryl Ott have announced the launch of their weight loss program "Inside Out Workout," a low-impact, high-reward fitness regime. Created to help individuals be more aware of their habits, the weight loss program teaches daily techniques to measure one's emotional and physical well-being. The workout itself is delivered through weekly video tutorials that make it easy to practice awareness while at home or the office. In addition, a "FoodWorkOut" iPhone application provides a game that can be played while eating that teaches individuals to slow down, which increases their metabolism, so they can better enjoy the workout program.

The Inside Out Workout brings two schools of thought together in a way that focuses on how the body responds to the food that we put into it. The first, food psychology, uses techniques to understand how emotional and social environments can impact or improve both digestion and weight loss. Emotional intelligence, the second technique, focuses on understanding the self and how emotions greatly impact daily life. Together, they are meant to bring awareness to life that helps individuals maintain their personal happiness.

"Ultimately, awareness brings happiness, or at least, an understanding of what needs to change in someone's life in order for them to be happy," said co-founder Tammy Kaatz. "The Inside Out Workout takes what we've learned from a lifetime of coaching and mentoring and makes it available for everyone."

"When you're aware of your happiness, then you can remember what it feels like to be happy and find your way back," co-founder Daryl Ott said. "Plus, the Inside Out Workout program requires no expensive memberships, wonder-foods or equipment; just you and your commitment to yourself."

In addition, to the FoodWorkOut iPhone application, the Inside Out Workout weekly video subscription costs only $49.95 for a full year subscription, while the FoodWorkOut iPhone application is a one-time fee of $4.99. Both can be found at http://insideoutworkout.com.
