Dr Joanne Jordan and Dr Stephen Bainbridge start new psychology service starts at The Clinic On The Green at Clifton, York

TWO York doctors have launched the city's first private clinical psychology service to treat patients who may face long waits for NHS services.

Dr Stephen Bainbridge and Dr Joanne Jordan have set up York Clinical Psychology Centre in Clifton Green to provide bespoke mental health services to help people of all ages live healthy, productive lives.

Although the pair specialise in areas including post traumatic stress disorder, chronic pain and neuropsychology, each with training that spanned more than a decade, they are accredited to treat any condition.

Dr Jordan and Dr Bainbridge, who graduated from the University of York and Ripon and York St John College respectively, said starting the business had been "a steep learning curve" as their backgrounds are both in the NHS.

While the service receives referrals from agencies such as BUPA and York-based Aviva, as well as GPs and solicitors, the pair are hoping to increase the number of people they treat who self-refer.

Dr Bainbridge, 35, said: "There is a gap in the market for clinical psychology in York – there is a need for patients to be seen. Even someone with an everyday common problem can face a lengthy wait with the NHS. Currently, there is no waiting list for our services.

"With a clinical pyschologist, you are getting someone who is highly trained and can draw on scientific evidence and understand a range of approaches to formulate someone's difficulty and give the best therapy.

SHARING HER SUCCESS: The nation's top SPM student Gladys Tan (fifth left), who hails from Kuching, with her parents, sister and fans at the end of the Ikon Inspirasi programme.

She said she will first enrol at Taylor's University College for a one-and-a-half year pre-university course under the American Degree Transfer Program (ADP) which begins in June.

"I am considering universities like Stanford University and Harvard University in the US," she told reporters after an Ikon Inspirasi (inspirational icons) programme held in conjunction with the Minggu Saham Amanah Malaysia (MSAM) here yesterday.

Tan, a former SMK Green Road student, obtained 10A+ in all subjects in last year's SPM examination.

According to Tan, she had been offered a scholarship under the National Scholarship programme and by Bank Negara to pursue studies abroad.

On her excellent performance in the SPM examination, she said she did not have any recipe.

"There is no need to wake up early or sleep late but to pay attention to the teachers in class," she added.
