Psychology conference highlights indigenous issues

More than three thousand pyschologists are in Melbourne this week, in what's been described as the "Olympic Games of Psychology." The International Congress on Applied Psychology has been held every four years since 1920. This year it's being held for the first time in the southern hemisphere, with Melbourne chosen as the host city. Themes include terrorism, refugee mental health and family counselling, with two vital Australian topics, indigenous psychology and tackling racism and prejudice.

IU East adds bachelor's degree in psychology

Indiana University East will offer a bachelor of science in psychology degree program this fall, campus officials announced this week.

Currently, students interested in psychology are enrolled in the bachelor of science in behavioral and social sciences with a concentration in psychology. Campus officials said the new degree will be more recognizable to employers and graduate-admission committees.

Creating a stand-alone bachelor's degree in psychology is an important part of the IU East strategy to offer as broad a spectrum of traditional bachelor's degrees as possible," said Larry Richards, IU East's executive vice chancellor for academic affairs, in a statement. "In the near future, I expect to see similar stand-alone bachelor's degrees in traditional disciples such as sociology, political science, history, mathematics and biochemistry, as well as additional professional areas such as health science and health administration."
