Joshi is Psychology prof and follower of Rajiv Gandhi Posted: 19 Jan 2011 09:27 PM PST New Delhi, Jan 19 : C P Joshi is a Psychology Professor and an ardent admirer of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Joshi was handed over the Cabinet berth of Union Road Transport and Highways Ministry in the Manmohan Singh government reshuffle this evening. Earlier, he was sworn in as the head of the Rural Development Ministry on May 22, 2009. The 58-year-old Joshi represents the Bhilwara constituency of Rajasthan in the 15th Lok Sabha. Born on July 29, 1950 in Kunwaria in Rajsamand district of Rajasthan, Joshi did graduation in law and completed his Masters in Physics. He also did a doctorate in Psychology. Before turning to politics, he was a Psychology professor at Mohanlal Sukhadia University. Joshi started his political career as Student's Union President at the same varsity in 1973. He was elected as Nathdwara assembly MLA for four times from 1980 to 2003. In 2003, he was appointed as the Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee chief. Though the Congress won the 2008 Assembly elections, he himself had lost by just one vote. He is second politician who had lost an assembly election by just one vote. It is his and Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot's efforts that the Congress wrested 19 of the total 25 parliamentary seats in the state, giving a shock to the BJP which had won 21 seats in the 2004 elections. Joshi was a cabinet minister in Rajasthan from 1998 to 2003 and handled key portfolios of Panchayti Raj, Education, Rural Development, Public Health Engineering, Policy Planning and Information Technology. Through his distinguished presence in these fields, he received the honour to head the Rural Development Ministry in 2009.
